Article Overview
Tray cables (Type TC) and Instrumentation Tray Cables (Type ITC) are the primary cables used in cable trays within electrical wells.
Tray Cable (Type TC)
Type TC (Tray Cable) is a factory-assembled cable consisting of two or more insulated conductors, with or without grounding conductors, enclosed in a non-metallic jacket. These cables are rated for 600 volts and are suitable for industrial power and control circuits. They are UL listed and designed for use in cable trays, raceways, and outdoor locations when supported by a messenger wire. TC cables are flame retardant and can be used in hazardous locations if specified, and TC-ER (exposure-rated) cables can extend up to six feet outside the tray to connect to equipment, provided they are supported and secured at intervals not exceeding six feet (NEC Section 392.10, Article 336) .
Instrumentation Tray Cable (Type ITC)
Type ITC (Instrumentation Tray Cable) is used for instrumentation and control applications. These cables can be shielded or unshielded, and may include twisted pairs or metal armor for additional protection. ITC cables are designed to reduce electrical interference and are suitable for sensitive signal transmission in industrial environments (NEC Article 727) .
Key Considerations
- UL Listing and Cable Tray Rating: All cables must be UL listed and marked as cable tray rated to ensure compliance with NEC standards.
- Environmental Suitability: Cables can be rated for indoor, outdoor, corrosive, or high electrical noise environments.
- Mechanical Protection: Many tray cables are designed to withstand crush, impact, and abrasion, making them suitable for industrial electrical wells .
- Cable Construction: Cables may be single-core, multi-core, or multi-pair, with optional shielding to reduce interference.
- Temperature Ratings: Typical operating conditions are 90°C in dry environments and 75°C in wet environments . In summary, Type TC and Type ITC tray cables are the standard choices for cable trays in electrical wells, offering durability, NEC compliance, and suitability for both power and instrumentation applications. Proper selection should consider voltage, environmental conditions, shielding requirements, and exposure ratings.
