Article Overview

A photovoltaic (PV) chip module converts sunlight directly into electricity by generating and separating electron-hole pairs in a semiconductor material, producing a flow of electric current.

How a PV Cell Works

A photovoltaic cell, the basic unit of a PV module, operates based on the photovoltaic effect. When sunlight, composed of photons, strikes the surface of the PV cell, the energy from the photons is absorbed by the semiconductor material, typically silicon . This energy excites electrons, freeing them from their atomic bonds and creating electron-hole pairs—electrons are negatively charged, and holes are positively charged . The PV cell contains a p-n junction, formed by layering a p-type semiconductor (positive) over an n-type semiconductor (negative). This junction creates an internal electric field that drives the separation of electrons and holes: electrons are pushed toward the n-type side, and holes toward the p-type side . This separation prevents recombination and establishes a potential difference across the cell.

Generation of Electric Current

Metal contacts on the top and bottom surfaces of the PV cell collect the separated charges. When an external circuit is connected, electrons flow through the circuit, generating direct current (DC) electricity . The voltage produced by a single silicon cell is typically around 0.5–0.6 volts, and the current depends on the light intensity and cell area .

PV Modules

Individual PV cells are combined into modules (solar panels) to produce a usable amount of electricity. Cells are connected in series to increase voltage and in parallel to increase current. The module's output depends on the number of cells, their efficiency, and environmental factors such as sunlight intensity, temperature, and shading .

Key Factors Affecting Performance

  • Semiconductor bandgap: Determines which wavelengths of light can be absorbed and converted into electricity .
  • Material type: Mono-crystalline silicon offers higher efficiency, while poly-crystalline silicon is cheaper but slightly less efficient .
  • Light intensity and spectrum: More photons with suitable energy increase electron excitation and current generation .
  • Temperature: Higher temperatures can reduce voltage and overall efficiency . In summary, a photovoltaic chip module works by absorbing sunlight, generating electron-hole pairs, separating charges via an internal electric field, and collecting the resulting current through an external circuit, providing a renewable source of electrical energy.
