If using a polishing machine, ensure the fixture allows the ferrule to move freely and that spring-loaded adapters are functioning properly .
Step 4: Inspection
After each polishing step, inspect the connector under a microscope. Look for:
- Scratches, pits, or cracks
- Proper fiber height and curvature
- Smooth, shiny surface indicating successful polishing If defects remain, repeat the appropriate polishing step. Automated polishing machines can provide more consistent results, but careful manual polishing is also effective with proper technique .
Step 5: Maintenance Tips
- Regularly clean polishing pads and equipment to prevent grit buildup .
- Avoid cross-contamination by keeping the workspace clean.
- Practice and follow manufacturer guidelines to maintain high-quality terminations .
