Overview
A fiber optic point sensor uses an optical fiber to detect changes in environmental conditions such as temperature, pressure, strain, or displacement at a single, localized point. Unlike distributed fiber optic sensors, which measure changes along the entire length of the fiber, point sensors focus on a specific location, providing precise, high-resolution measurements at that spot .
Working Principle
The sensor operates by modulating light traveling through the optical fiber. The light's intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization changes in response to the physical quantity being measured. A light source sends light through the fiber to the sensing element, and a detector measures the altered light signal. The changes in the light signal are then converted into an electronic signal for analysis . Point sensors can be intrinsic, where the fiber itself acts as the sensing element, or extrinsic, where the fiber transmits light to a separate sensing element located at the measurement point . Intrinsic sensors are often used for high-precision applications, while extrinsic sensors are useful in environments where direct access is difficult or hazardous.
