In 1966, Kao published the groundbreaking paper "Dielectric-Fibre Surface Waveguides for Optical Frequencies," which suggested using quartz-based glass fibers for long-distance data transmission and demonstrated that reducing fiber attenuation to 20 decibels per kilometer would make optical communication feasible . By 1970, the first practical fiber-optic cables were produced, and by the 1980s, fiber optic networks were being implemented worldwide, revolutionizing telecommunications and enabling the high-speed Internet we rely on today . Beyond his research, Gao Kun was a dedicated educator. He served as a professor and later vice president at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he also founded the Hong Kong Independent School Foundation . His contributions earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 for "groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication," and he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to fiber-optic communications .
