Article Overview

The basic elements of a fiber optic sensor include a light source, optical fiber, sensing element (or transducer), and a detector.

Key Components

1. Light Source The light source generates the optical signal that travels through the fiber. Common sources include LEDs or laser diodes, which provide stable and coherent light for accurate sensing. The light intensity, wavelength, or phase can be modulated depending on the sensor design . 2. Optical Fiber The optical fiber acts as the transmission medium, guiding light from the source to the sensing element and back to the detector. It consists of a core and cladding with different refractive indices, allowing light to propagate via total internal reflection. Fibers can be made of plastic or glass, with glass fibers suitable for high-temperature or high-precision applications . 3. Sensing Element (Transducer) The sensing element interacts with the physical quantity being measured, such as temperature, pressure, strain, or chemical concentration. In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself is affected by the measurand, modulating the light directly. In extrinsic sensors, the fiber transmits light to an external transducer that modulates the light signal . 4. Detector The detector receives the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal for analysis. Changes in light intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength caused by the sensing element are interpreted to quantify the measured parameter .

Optional Supporting Elements

  • Interferometers (e.g., Mach-Zehnder, Michelson) for phase-sensitive measurements.
  • Couplers and splitters to direct light to multiple sensing points.
  • Signal processing electronics to enhance accuracy and interpret the optical signal. These elements work together to provide a highly sensitive, compact, and electromagnetic interference-resistant sensing system, suitable for applications ranging from industrial monitoring to medical diagnostics .
