Article Overview

Distribution boxes distribute and protect electrical power, switch boxes house switches for controlling circuits, and junction boxes safely connect and branch wires.

Distribution Box

A distribution box (also called a distribution board or panel) is the central unit that distributes incoming electrical power to multiple circuits. It houses protective devices such as circuit breakers, fuses, and residual current devices (RCDs), which prevent overloads, short circuits, and earth faults, ensuring safety for both people and equipment . Distribution boxes are typically used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings where multiple circuits need to be managed. They handle higher voltages (220V–690V) and currents ranging from tens to hundreds of amps . They allow isolation of individual circuits for maintenance without disrupting the entire system.

Switch Box

A switch box is a smaller enclosure designed to house switches that control lighting or other electrical devices. It is commonly flush-mounted or surface-mounted in walls and ceilings for indoor use . Switch boxes are usually rated for low-voltage applications (12V–240V) and provide a safe, accessible location for operating switches. Accessories like spring covers, plaster adjustment rings, and membranes are often used to improve installation efficiency and energy performance .

Junction Box

A junction box is primarily used for connecting, branching, and routing wires safely. It does not control or distribute power like a distribution box but provides a secure enclosure for wire splices, terminations, and connections, protecting them from dust, moisture, and accidental contact . Junction boxes are ideal for low-voltage wiring, including lighting, CCTV, communication, and solar panel systems. They simplify troubleshooting, allow system expansion, and are available in various IP-rated enclosures (IP20–IP67) for indoor or outdoor use . Junction boxes are often located between the distribution box and the load, acting as the “crossroads” of the electrical circuit .

Key Differences

  • Function: Distribution boxes manage and protect power; switch boxes control circuits; junction boxes connect and branch wires.
  • Voltage/Current: Distribution boxes handle high voltage and current; switch and junction boxes are for low to medium voltage.
  • Components: Distribution boxes contain breakers and protective devices; switch boxes contain switches; junction boxes contain wire connectors or terminal blocks.
  • Location: Distribution boxes are central; switch boxes are near the controlled device; junction boxes are along wiring paths where connections or splits occur. Choosing the right box depends on application, voltage level, and functional requirements. Proper selection ensures safety, reliability, and efficient electrical system operation .
