While it results in slightly higher signal loss and back reflection compared to fusion splicing, it is useful for temporary connections, emergency repairs, or situations where fusion splicing equipment is unavailable . - Strip and clean the fiber ends.
- Cleave the fibers precisely.
- Insert the fibers into a mechanical splice holder with index-matching gel.
- Secure the fibers and protect the joint with a splice tray or enclosure. Advantages:

- Requires less specialized equipment.
- Useful for emergency repairs or temporary network extensions. Disadvantages:
- Slightly higher insertion loss and back reflection.
- Less durable than fusion splices for long-term network reliability.

In ring network topologies, maintaining signal integrity and minimizing downtime is critical because each node relies on continuous optical paths for redundancy. Therefore:
