Optical Fiber Preforms
An optical fiber preform is a cylindrical glass rod, typically 1–2 meters long, composed of a core and cladding. Preforms are made from high-purity silica (SiO₂), often doped with materials like germanium dioxide (GeO₂) to increase the refractive index of the core or fluorine to lower the cladding's refractive index . Preform Fabrication Methods
Several advanced deposition techniques are used to manufacture preforms:
- Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD): Reactants are introduced inside a silica tube, forming layers of glass inwardly .
- Outside Vapor Deposition (OVD): Silica particles are deposited on a rotating rod and consolidated into dense glass .
- Vapor Axial Deposition (VAD): Builds the preform axially with soot deposition and sintering . Specialty preforms can include rare-earth doping for active fibers, stress elements for polarization-maintaining fibers, or capillary stacking for photonic crystal fibers .
Optical Fibers
Once the preform is prepared, it is drawn into thin fibers in a fiber drawing tower. The fiber diameter is reduced from centimeters in the preform to typically 125 micrometers, maintaining the core-cladding structure and refractive index profile . Fibers can be single-mode for long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission or multi-mode for shorter distances. Plastic optical fibers are also drawn from preforms but at lower temperatures (~200°C) compared to silica fibers .

Optical fibers are then assembled into optical cables, which provide mechanical protection, environmental resistance, and ease of installation. Cables may include:
- Loose-tube designs for outdoor or long-haul networks.
- Tight-buffered designs for indoor or patch applications.
- Armored cables for harsh environments or high-power laser transmission . Cables integrate multiple fibers, protective coatings, strength members, and jackets to ensure durability and reliable signal transmission over kilometers.
