Classification by Sensor Location

Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors: Here, the fiber primarily serves as a transmission medium, guiding light to and from an external sensing element. The sensing occurs outside the fiber, often at a specially designed tip or "black box," which interacts with the environment to generate an optical signal. These sensors are commonly used for measuring rotation, vibration, displacement, torque, and acceleration in hard-to-reach locations . Hybrid Sensors: These combine features of both intrinsic and extrinsic sensors, allowing the fiber to carry light into and out of the sensing device while also being affected by the measurand .

Intensity-Based Sensors: These sensors detect changes in light intensity caused by environmental factors. Examples include microbend sensors and evanescent wave sensors. They are simple, cost-effective, and suitable for distributed sensing, though they can be affected by variable losses in the fiber system .
