  4. Fusion: An electric arc or other heat source (such as a CO2 laser or gas flame in advanced splicers) is applied to the fiber ends, melting the glass and fusing the fibers together. This creates a continuous optical path with typical splice losses as low as 0.02 dB .
  5. Protection: After fusion, the splice is protected using a heat-shrink sleeve or other protective covering to prevent mechanical stress and environmental damage .
